CHENNAI: Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians by four wickets in their first match of the season. Chasing a target of 156 runs, Mumbai's Malayali spinner Vignesh Puthur made a brilliant debut by taking three wickets but the effort was not sufficient to help his team win.

Mumbai lost the toss and elected to bat, but could only score 155 runs for the loss of nine wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (53) and Rachin Ravindra (65*) scored half-centuries to help Chennai win. CSK captain M S Dhoni entered to crease for a late cameo after Jadeja got dismissed in the 19th over. Dhoni remained unbeaten scoring zilch.

Noor Ahmed, who took four wickets, and Khaleel Ahmed, who took three wickets, restricted Mumbai to a low score. Khaleel dismissed Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma for a duck. This was Rohit's 18th duck in the IPL, equaling the record of Dinesh Karthik and Glenn Maxwell.
