HYDERABAD: At least 17 people were killed in a fire that broke out in a building near Hyderabad’s Charminar. The fire broke out at Gulzar House near Charminar Sunday morning at 6 am. It is suspected that a short circuit may have led to the tragedy.
Many sustained injuries in the accident and they have been hospitalized. The fire broke out in the area where there are a row of jewelry shops and is very close to Charminar. Among the dead are eight children. The fire department said they got a call around 6.30 and then rushed to the spot.
The fire was doused by eleven fire engines. Union Minister G Kishan Reddy said the incident is very sad. He said that he discussed with senior officials handling the situation regarding rescue and relief operations, and urged them to provide immediate medical support and help. The Government of India will provide necessary support and assistance. I request the state government to take all necessary precautions including fire safety audit of buildings, to avoid such mishaps in future. My heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident and prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured.
The Prime Minister's Office said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also expressed grief over the incident. An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each dead. The injured would be given Rs 50,000.
