KOCHI: Faithful till the last breath and an unwavering guardian trait are behind the rise in more people opting for Indian Pariah Dogs in Kerala. The royal 'Rajapalayam' breed is the current favourite among Malayalees. Other South Indian breeds, such as the Chippiparai and Mudhol, are also attracting attention.
Kombai, Kanni, Pashmi, Jonangi, Caravan, Rampur Hound, and Himalayan Sheep Hound are also native breeds that Malayalees have started to like. The speciality of the native breeds is their ability to resist diseases and acclimatize easily to climate change and their low maintenance cost. They can be raised indoors and also can be used as a hunting dog.
Rudra Das, owner of the Kennel Club in Edappally, Ernakulam, highly recommends Indian breeds over any other. According to him, 'Rajapalayam' is the new favourite of Malayalees with many pet enthusiasts busy enquiring about their availability.
The 'Rajapalayam' has a strange nature, as it takes command only from his master. It has long limbs and can run at a speed of more than 40 kilometres per hour. It can run continuously for an average of two hours. They will take anything for food and are highly immune.
Rajapalayam will always walk in front of his master. No matter how far they go, they will find their scent and return home. 20 per cent of the Rajapalayam breed suffer from hearing loss.
