NEW DELHI: The Indian Armed Forces successfully carried out the maiden test launch of Akash Prime, the upgraded version of the Akash missile, on Wednesday in Ladakh. The missile destroyed dual high-speed aerial targets at an altitude of 15,000 feet during its first trial.

Akash Prime, which destroyed two high-speed unmanned aerial targets, is a new variant of the Akash Mark-1 and Mark-1S missiles that had shone during Operation Sindhoor. Akash Prime will soon be inducted into the armed forces.

A key feature of Akash Prime is the indigenously developed Radio Frequency (RF) seeker, which helps track targets. With a range of 20 kilometres, this missile will aid the armed forces in neutralising aerial threats.

Features of Akash Prime:

  • Mobile platform allows for easy deployment
  • One launcher can carry three missiles
  • Each missile is 20 feet long and weighs 710 kg
  • Carries a 60 kg warhead
  • Can operate in all weather conditions
  • Automatically detects and neutralises threats like low-flying drones
