MANCHESTER: Gary Kirsten, the former India coach who led India to the 2011 World Cup title and the best former South African opener the world has ever seen, has shared his opinion on Shubman Gill's captaincy. Kirsten was the batting coach of Gujarat Titans and Gill's mentor in the first season of Gill's captaincy in the 2024 season of the IPL. Kirsten stated that Gill has the potential to become one of India's greats. Gary Kirsten expressed his opinion openly in an interview with Rediff.com. Kirsten emphasised the importance of man management in captaincy. He expressed his opinion by citing his experience with Dhoni, who was known as 'Captain Cool'.

Gary Kirsten's words:

I think Shubman Gill got great potential. Captaincy is a whole lot of things that you've got to put together. He's a great thinker in the game. He's a good player himself. But there's a whole bunch of things you've got to get right. And I think man management is going to play, like any leader. Dhoni was an incredible man manager. If he can get that component of his leadership really fired up, I think he has all the credentials to become a great captain for India. - Kirsten clarified.

Shubman has been in brilliant form with the bat in England. He has scored 607 runs in six innings at an average of 101.17. The 25-year-old Gill will be aiming to inspire his team to make a strong comeback against Ben Stokes and his men. Although India are currently trailing the series 1-2, the Indian skipper is confident of winning the next two Tests against England.
