LONDON: English actor Terence Stamp (87), who garnered massive popularity through Superman movies, passed away on Sunday. His antagonist role of ‘General Zod’ in the Superman films made an instant impact, and over the years, it was through Zod that the audience identified Terence. Over six decades, he appeared in many films, including The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Far from the Madding Crowd, and Valkyrie. Terence was also noted as a writer.
Born in East London in 1938, Terence entered the acting world from the advertising industry. In 1962, he received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in his first film, Billy Budd. He soon began playing complex villainous roles. In 1965, he won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival (for The Collector).
