KOZHIKODE: Rahul Mamkootathil’s future as MLA has become uncertain after the party high command directed leaders not to damage Congress’s chances of returning to power in Kerala by protecting anyone facing serious allegations. The state leadership has been instructed to approach the upcoming elections with a clean image.
Following this directive, Opposition Leader VD Satheesan took a strong stand against Rahul, hinting that the party may distance itself from the young leader if needed. The pressure on Rahul increased on Saturday after the leak of another phone conversation linked to the abortion allegations, in which he was heard threatening a woman, saying, “it would take just a few seconds to kill you.”
Meanwhile, Shafi Parambil came out in Rahul’s defence, pointing out that he had resigned from party posts soon after the controversy broke out. But Satheesan clarified that stepping down was only the first step and assured that the party would investigate all complaints seriously. He also stressed that strict action would be taken if Rahul is found guilty. Satheesan has already briefed other alliance leaders, including those from the Muslim League, about his firm stance on the issue.
Satheesan was the key force behind selecting Rahul as the Congress candidate in Palakkad and ensuring the seat was retained. He also cautioned VK Sreekandan and others that the party would not back anyone attempting to target the women who raised complaints against Rahul. Meanwhile, KPCC Working President TN Prathapan stressed that party leaders must maintain a spotless image.
Party's image will be ruined if it supports Rahul
With local body elections approaching and assembly polls just a few months away, senior leaders are keen to ensure that allegations involving women do not affect the party’s electoral prospects. This is why no prominent Congress leaders except Shafi and Sreekandan are willing to form a protective circle around Rahul. Arguing that LDF MLAs did not resign after facing allegations could weaken the party’s position. The directive to avoid standing with those accused reportedly came from Rahul Gandhi himself. AICC General Secretary Deepa Dasmunsi, who stated that no complaint has been received against Rahul, also said that the party will stand by moral principles.
Attempts to justify:
Rahul told a news channel yesterday morning that he has no plans to resign as MLA.
By noon, details of another phone call were leaked, in which Rahul allegedly threatened to kill the woman if she damaged his reputation after she repeatedly refused to undergo an abortion.
He later warned that he would meet the media at home. A senior leader intervened, realising this could create more trouble for the party.
