THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The streets on Wednesday resembled the early 90s, as Malayali girls, donning Kasavu sarees, decorating their hair with jasmine flowers, were ubiquitous across Thiruvananthapuram. Street photographers and influencers also roamed around the city asking beautiful girls to collaborate with them for content. It was euphoria all around as most schools and colleges in the capital city celebrated Onam on Wednesday.

Onam celebrations were held at University College and Vazhuthacaud Government Women's College yesterday, while government and private institutions will celebrate the biggest festival of Kerala in the coming weeks. This time, most girls in colleges preferred tissue cotton sarees and Kalamkari blouses over cotton sarees. Shirts embroidered only on the pocket side became the new vogue among boys.

Colleges in the city organised programs like Sadya, Pulikali, Onapattu, Uriyadi, Athapookalam competitions till late evening yesterday. Even after the celebrations, many preferred to go to Kanakakunnu, while some others relished the double-decker ride across the city. Most of the educational institutions that celebrated Onam relied on the city’s famous catering agencies like Mangalya and Anandam for Onam Sadya.

The video of the celebrations has already gone viral on Instagram.
