VIJAYAWADA: Kerala's anti-corruption crusader Dr. Raju Narayana Swamy exhorted the officials involved in disaster management to make sure that community-based risk mitigation is practised in letter and in spirit.
Underlining the crucial point that systematic failure during deluges often points to a lack of appreciation of the implication of hazard exposure, vulnerabilities of people, infrastructure and institutions as well as the absence of coordinated intervention, Dr.Swamy called upon officers to prioritize multi-hazard risk mitigation. He was delivering the valedictory address at a pan-India training organised by NIDM, Vijayawada.
The bedrock of such a framework should be long-range urban infrastructure development and risk bundling. Capacity building of professionals of cross-sectoral departments needs to be done regularly. Only then can a shock ripple through the landscape without bringing the entire system to a halt, opined Dr.Swamy. Col.Palagani Reddy presided over the function.
