KASARAGOD: Depressed by chronic illness, an elderly man committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest on Thiruvonam day. Subbanna Bhatt (86) of Miyapadavu died. The incident that shook the state took place at around 3 pm. He committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest with a revolver. His wife has told the police that he shot himself when she went to fetch water from the kitchen while he was resting in the bedroom after lunch.
Subbanna Bhatt's wife went to the bedroom, hearing the gunshots, to find him lying in a pool of blood. The police were informed by the locals who heard her screams. A police team led by Manjeswaram Inspector Anoop Kumar immediately reached the spot and conducted an investigation. Forensic experts from Kannur also reached the spot.
The body was handed over to the relatives after the postmortem at Pariyaram Medical College yesterday afternoon. It is learnt that the gun used for the shooting was not licensed. The police have registered a case based on the statement of a neighbour.
His wife and Subbanna Bhatt have age-related ailments. The Manjeswaram police said that the suicide was due to mental exhaustion. The Subbanna-Rajamma couple have no children.
