Social media platforms banned, thousands of youths take to streets in Nepal; 16 deaths, more than 100 people injured

KATHMANDU: Widespread protests have erupted across Nepal after the government banned 26 social media platforms citing national security concerns. The move has triggered strong opposition, especially among the youth, who alleged that the ban was announced in an attempt to cover up corruption and misgovernance.

Thousands of youths, including students, marched through the streets of Kathmandu and other major cities carrying placards with slogans such as 'End Corruption' and 'Curbing Freedom of Expression.' The demonstrations soon turned violent, leading to clashes between police and protesters. According to reports, 16 people were killed in police firing, and more than 100 people were injured.

To contain the unrest, the Nepal government deployed the army in Kathmandu and other cities. It also convened an emergency meeting to assess the current situation. Protesters are demanding the restoration of social media platforms and an end to corruption and nepotism in governance. The demonstrators even attempted to march into the Parliament building during the protest. What began in Kathmandu has now spread to several other cities.
