THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former District Collector and PRD Director M. Nandakumar (69) passed away at his residence in Vattiyoorkavu. He had been in a coma following complications from surgery after a brain haemorrhage. He was under treatment at a private hospital, where he died around 7.30 pm on Tuesday.
The body will be kept for public homage at the Jawaharnagar University Women’s Association Hall from 9.30 am to noon today, after which it will be taken to his residence. The funeral will take place at 5 pm at Saanthi Kavadam, Thycaud.
Nandakumar was a great orator, writer and astrologer. He had expertise in numerology and later mastered palmistry after receiving manthra dheeksha from Mitran Namboothiripad.
He also wrote articles for The Indian Express. Nandakumar began his career in 1993 as a Block Development Officer and was later conferred IAS. He served in several important positions, including PRD Director, Thiruvananthapuram District Collector (2011), Lottery Director, Collegiate Education Director, Additional District Magistrate, Kudumbashree Director, Civil Supplies Director, Sports and Youth Affairs Director, and Commissioner of the State Land Use Board.
He is survived by his wife N. S. Sreelatha (Retd. Registrar, Cooperative Department), children Vishnunandan (Engineer, Tata Consultancy, Bengaluru) and Parvathi Nandan (Kerala Gramin Bank), and son-in-law Krishnanunni (First Class Judicial Magistrate, Adoor).
