SAN FRANCISCO: Parents of Krysta Tsukahara have filed a lawsuit alleging that the 19-year-old girl died after being unable to escape from a burning Tesla vehicle due to a design flaw. The death of the college sophomore named Krysta Tsukahara is a result of the design of the vehicle that did not allow the doors to open in situations such as a fire. The alleged design flaw is that the doors cannot be opened when the battery that powers the doors dies due to a fire or other reasons.
The parents say the company has known about the flaw for years and could have moved fast to fix the problem, but did not. The accident occurred when a Tesla Cybertruck driven by a driver under the influence of drugs crashed into a tree. Krysta was riding in the back seat of the car. Three people, including the driver, died in the crash.
The incident comes just weeks after federal regulators opened an investigation after Tesla drivers complained about problems with the door locking mechanism. The case is a major setback for Tesla, which is trying to convince Americans that its cars are safe enough to drive without a driver.
