TEL AVIV: Amid ongoing peace talks in Egypt aimed at ending the Gaza war, Hamas has presented its main conditions, including a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. However, Hamas has so far refused to agree to one of the key points in US President Donald Trump’s peace plan: the disarmament of Hamas.
Trump’s plan calls for Hamas to surrender weapons, allow members to leave Gaza with amnesty, and release all hostages. While Hamas has expressed willingness to release all prisoners and stop attacks, it has not agreed to the disarmament requirement. Hamas is also reportedly uninterested in having an international peace board, led by the US, take oversight of Gaza.
Israel has stated that it is ready for a ceasefire, but military withdrawal will be allowed only in phases. Arab countries, including Qatar, mediating the talks, have emphasised that days of discussion are needed to resolve these differences and interpret the provisions of Trump’s plan practically. Despite this, the US has reiterated that the first phase, including a ceasefire and release of hostages, could be implemented by the end of this week or early next week.
The first round of talks, which began on Monday in Sharm El-Sheikh, ended on a positive note, according to the US.

Fighting continues
Despite peace efforts, Israel continues attacks in Gaza without pause. On the second anniversary of the war, Israeli land and air strikes hit multiple areas in Gaza. Early yesterday, 8 people were killed in heavy bombings in southern Gaza and Gaza City. Hamas launched rocket attacks on Israel, but no targets were hit. The death toll in Gaza has now exceeded 67,170.
