It has always been a must for Malayalis that the colour and quality of gold should be as pure as a yellow sunflower. 9, 14 and 18 carat jewellery is fulfilling the desire of Malayalis as the price of gold rockets beyond all limits. The new generation and the middle class are approaching low-carat gold as the price of gold approaches lakhs.

Gold jewellery is made by adding other metals (alloys) such as copper, silver and zinc to 24 carat (99.9%) pure gold. This alloy gives hardness and strength to the relatively weak gold. The special feature of low-carat gold is that even jewellery with very low thicknesses can be made.

22 carat gold is used for traditional jewellery and investment purposes. 18 carat is used for diamond jewellery and stone-studded jewellery. At the same time, more fashionable jewellery is made in 14 and 9 carats.

20 percent of the gold imported into India is used by Malayalis. There are about 15,000 establishments in Kerala, including small and large jewellers and gold buying agencies. With the rise in gold prices, jewellers and manufacturers are paying more attention to the low-carat jewellery market. Low-carat gold will become an investment and savings if there is a change in taking only 22-carat gold as collateral.

Mostly, low-carat gold is used as jewellery for light-weight, fashionable women, small earrings, thin bracelets, light-weight chains, and men's bracelets and rings. It is also used for jewellery set with Navaratna, diamonds, and other decorative stones. The new generation is increasingly attracted to such jewelry.
