Christians facing 'existential threat'; Trump says radical Islamists behind massacre, claims United States can save Nigeria

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has said the United States is ready to save all Christians around the world. Trump has alleged that Christians in Nigeria are facing an existential threat and that radical Islamists are behind it. "The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other Countries. We stand ready, willing, and able to save our Great Christian population around the World!" Trump posted in Truth Social

“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a “COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN” But that is the least of it. When Christians, or any such group, is slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria (3,100 versus 4,476 Worldwide), something must be done!” Trump said in his post on Truth Social.

The US has previously claimed that a Christian genocide is taking place in Nigeria. However, experts say that this claim hides a more complex reality in the country. Nigeria has previously rejected such claims. Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, is predominantly Muslim in the north and predominantly Christian in the south.

For the past 15 years, the Islamist group Boko Haram has been waging a violent insurgency in northeastern Nigeria, and the conflict remains ongoing with a recent resurgence of the group's activities into 2025. As a result, more than 40,000 people lost their lives and 2 million people lost their homes.
