KOCHI: A huge tank of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) collapsed at Thammanam leading to the flooding of houses in the area. The people of the area said the water flow was similar to that of a landslide. The incident happened early Monday morning at around 2 am. The residents awoke hearing the sound of the gushing water.

A large crack appeared in the wall of the huge tank with a storage capacity of 1.4 crore liters. Water coming from the Aluva area was stored here. As the water rushed to more than ten nearby houses, many household appliances like TVs and refrigerators were damaged. Moreover, many vehicles parked in the area were swept away. A wall of a house collapsed on top of the parked car, causing damages.

The water that entered the houses at night began to recede only after an hour. Only after that, the local residents were able to remove the mud and soil that came with the water. The officials of the water authority visited the spot. It is reported that since the tank supplies water to the Tripunithura area, water supply to these areas will be disrupted.

Uma Thomas MLA visited the area and requested the water authority to compensate the residents for the damages.
