THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Agricultural University to teach toddy tapping. The Kerala Toddy Board, in collaboration with the university, has devised a one-month toddy technician course. The Excise Department gave approval to the Toddy Board's project report last week. The biggest challenge facing the toddy industry is the lack of toddy tappers.
The course will start in three months at the Vellayani campus in Thiruvananthapuram. Old-gen toddy tappers will also climb coconut trees with toddy pots and tapping gears, along with the 'Gen Zs' riding around in jeans and T-shirts. The age limit is 18-45.
Tapping training will be conducted on coconut trees on the campus. The theory classes will be taught by two university teachers. Traditional tapping masters will be appointed to provide practical training.
Those who successfully complete the course will be awarded the Toddy Technician Certificate by the Toddy Board. The application notification will be out soon. There are plans to organise the course in other districts as well, if necessary.

Free toddy education, Rs 10,000 stipend
The toddy technician course is completely free. 30 people are admitted in a batch. The toddy board will bear all the expenses including accommodation and food of the learners. A stipend of Rs 10,000 will be given to each person a month.

The Toddy Technician Course is part of the effort to bring the toddy industry out of crisis. Traditional toddy tappers are disappearing. The obstacle to starting star shops and restaurants is the lack of toddy tappers.
