BUENOS AIRES: Argentine football legend Lionel Messi said he is not interested in taking up a coaching role after retiring from football. However, the 38-year-old said he would like to remain involved in the game as a football club owner. He shared his views in an interview given to a private television channel recently.
"I don't see myself as a coach. I would like to work as a manager, but more than that, I would prefer to be a club owner," Messi said.
Messi's plan is to follow the example of Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham and own a football club in the future. "I want to build a club from the grassroots level. I want to provide children with good facilities and opportunities and help them reach greater achievements. If I get to choose, this would be my priority,” he added.
Messi is currently under contract with Inter Miami until 2028, indicating that he does not plan to retire anytime soon. He also said he is excited about playing at Inter Miami’s new stadium, Miami Freedom Park, which is expected to open in 2026. At present, Messi is preparing to defend Argentina's World Cup title in the upcoming tournament scheduled for this year.
