THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former CPM MLA P Aisha Potty made a surprising switch to Congress on Tuesday. Potty reached the Congress protest venue and took membership. Opposition leader V D Satheesan welcomed her while she took the membership from KPCC president Sunny Joseph. By joining Congress, Aisha ended her three-decade-long association with the CPM.
Aisha Potty had been at loggerheads with the CPM for some time. She had earlier announced her retirement from active politics due to health problems. She was a member of the CPM Kottarakkara area committee for a long time. Aisha first entered the assembly as a giant slayer by defeating heavyweight R Balakrishna Pillai. She became an MLA from Kottarakkara three times.
After joining the Congress, Aisha responded that she is not afraid of criticism.
“I am still in camaraderie with the comrades of my native place. Only a few decision-makers made it difficult for me. The movement I initially believed in gave me a lot of trouble. It is my native place that made me who I am. I am not here craving for power. I am one among the people,' Aisha clarified. There are indications that Aisha Potty will be the UDF candidate in the upcoming assembly elections in Kottarakkara.
