Aquaponics is a farming method that can be done at home without soil or chemical fertilisers. This method is best for those who want more income but have only a small area. This method of growing fish and vegetables simultaneously is growing popular in Kerala as well.
Aquaponics is a sustainable, symbiotic farming method that combines aquaculture with hydroponics (soilless plant cultivation). Fish are raised in a tank. The nitrogen-rich water in this tank is pumped through pipes to the beds where the plants grow. This water, which contains the remains of the fish, is an excellent fertiliser for the plants. The plants absorb the waste in the water and purify the water. This clean water is returned to the fish pond.
Support is provided with rocks and gravel to prevent the plants from falling over due to the lack of soil. All crops like spinach, beans, tomatoes, okra, brinjal, cabbage, cauliflower, chillies, kutti amara, medicinal plants, and fruits can be cultivated in this way. Freshwater fish like Katla, Rohu, Tilapia, iridescent shark catfish, carp, etc. can be grown along with the plants.
This cultivation can be done successfully even in a 220 sq ft area. 100 percent organic products are obtained, since there is no need for chemical fertilisers or pesticides. It is possible to earn lakhs of rupees per month from commercial aquaponics. One can raise about 500 kg of fish by building a 10,000 liter water tank in a half-cent area of the backyard.
