THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Dr Bindu Sundar, a gynaecologist at Nedumangad District Hospital, has been suspended in the case of the newborn’s death during C-section. The doctor was earlier transferred to Punalur Taluk Hospital. Allegations of medical negligence were levelled against the doctor in the past. The newborn’s father told media that a bribe was given to the doctor. It was in this context that the health department suspended her.
The baby of Ranjana of Palode died during C-section yesterday. The director of the health department had directed the doctor to go on forced leave following protests staged by the baby’s relatives. The doctor had also assured that she would not be taken back to the hospital. However, the relatives continued to protest, stating that this action was not satisfactory. The relatives also took a stand that they would not accept the body of the baby without suspending the doctor. Following this, the health department decided to transfer Dr Bindu Sundar.
Pregnant Ranjana was admitted to the hospital the other day. When she came for a check-up, she was advised to be admitted for delivery. She was admitted to the labour room at 4 am. The baby was taken out through C-section at 2 pm, but later informed the family about the death of the baby. The relatives alleged that the delay in performing the surgery was the reason for the baby's death. The relatives had also alleged that Dr Bindu had left the hospital without giving an explanation for the baby's death.
