KOLLAM: Despite having 18 elephants in her yard, Prameela Shaji's life is all about cows and goats. Prameela of 'Kaveri' house, Puthenkulam, Paravoor takes care of 200 cows, five buffaloes, eight oxes, and 100 goats. She also has chickens, ducks, and turkeys. This lady dairy farmer has set up a state-of-the-art ranch in front of her house for these animals.
Prameela's husband Puthankulam Shaji has 18 elephants. Shaji's father Vishwambharan also had elephants. 54-year-old Prameela has won the state award for best female farmer. Although Prameela loves elephants, she has been fond of cows and goats since childhood.
Prameela is a wonder to her workers as well as she works harder than them on the farm. There are 12 workers on the farm, but Prameela reaches the animals at 4 am. She bathes them, cleans the area, and feeds them. After the hustle and bustle of the house, Prameela returns to the barn at 3 pm.
700 liters of milk daily
700 liters of milk are obtained daily. When the milk of HF cows and Jersey cows is combined, the fat content and quality gets balanced. Half of the total cows are milked while the rest are inseminated and made pregnant. Milk is available here in any season. When cows and goats give birth, Prameela will be there, giving up food and sleep. She also dries and sells the dung. The cows and goats that give birth on the farm are raised as calves. Prameela has her children Dr. Binsi and Kaveri (Sharjah) as encouragement.
'I like animal husbandry. I am so happy to have received the award of the state government.'
