TEHRAN: The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) vowed to avenge the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The IRGC announced that it is launching the most destructive operation in Iran's history and that those behind Khamenei's assassination will not be spared. They said the retaliatory operation will begin shortly and will target American bases and occupied territories in the region.
"We have lost a great leader. We mourn his passing. Khamenei's martyrdom at the hands of the most brutal killers of humanity is a sign of recognition of his sincere services. The hands of revenge of the Iranians will not leave them alone," the IRGC said.
Israeli authorities announced that Khamenei's body had been found in the rubble of a building. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday claimed that Khamenei was eliminated; however, the news lacked veracity. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed that Khamenei and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian were safe.
The joint Israeli-US strikes on Iran began on Saturday morning. Reports emerged that Khamenei's palace was destroyed in the attack, and the supreme leader was moved to a safe location. Israel also claimed that Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Mohammad Pakpour was killed in the attack. Pakpour, one of Iran's most powerful men, rose to this position following the assassination of his predecessor, Hossein Salami.
In Iran, 201 people, including political and military leaders, were killed. Of these, 87 were children. Missiles hit two schools in Minab and Tehran. 747 people were injured. The death toll may rise further.
