AHMEDABAD: The Narendra Modi Stadium bore witness to a masterclass in aggressive, fearless cricket as India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs to claim the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title. In a final that will be etched in history, the Men in Blue proved why they are the most dominant force in the shortest format, becoming the first side to win back-to-back T20 World Cups and the first host nation to lift the trophy on home soil.

Batting first, India unleashed an absolute onslaught, posting a massive 255/5—the highest team total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final. The tone was set early by openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, who shared a blistering 98-run partnership off just 43 balls. Abhishek dazzled the crowd with a 21-ball 52, while Sanju Samson played the innings of his life, anchoring the charge with a magnificent 89 off 46 deliveries, decorated with eight towering sixes.

Even after the opening stand was broken, there was no respite for the New Zealand bowlers. Ishan Kishan strode to the crease and immediately tore into the attack, smashing 54 off 25 balls. Although a frantic 16th over by James Neesham—who removed Samson, Kishan, and captain Suryakumar Yadav in quick succession—briefly stalled India’s momentum, the finishing touches were explosive. Shivam Dube arrived with lethal intent, smashing 26* off just 8 deliveries, including 24 runs off the final over, to propel India to a total that effectively took the game away from the Kiwis.

Chasing a gargantuan target of 256, New Zealand’s innings never gathered the necessary pace. Despite an aggressive half-century from Tim Seifert, who struck 52 off 26, the Indian bowling attack remained relentless. Jasprit Bumrah was near-unplayable, consistently finding the base of the stumps with precision-engineered yorkers, finishing with a match-winning spell. The turning point arrived when Axar Patel dismantled the middle order, and when Daryl Mitchell fell to his clever bowling, the writing was on the wall for the Black Caps.

As the final wicket fell and New Zealand were bowled out for 159, the roar in Ahmedabad was deafening. This victory marks a significant milestone in Indian cricket, with Suryakumar Yadav joining the elite ranks of captains to lead the nation to global glory. By securing their third title following the historic 2007 and 2024 campaigns, India has cemented its status as the heartbeat of world T20 cricket.
