MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a Rs 131 crore cash reward for the Indian cricket team following its second consecutive ICC Men's T20 World Cup triumph. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the reward is in recognition of the team’s outstanding performance in the final held in Ahmedabad, where India defeated New Zealand to lift the title.
With this victory, India achieved several milestones in the history of the T20 World Cup. The team became the first to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title. India also set a record by becoming the only team to win the tournament three times. In addition, the team made history by becoming the first to win the T20 World Cup on home soil.
When India, led by Rohit Sharma, won the title in 2024, the then BCCI secretary Jay Shah had announced a reward of Rs 125 crore for the team. This time, the reward has been increased by Rs 6 crore, taking the total to Rs 131 crore. Apart from this, India will also receive Rs 21.5 crore as prize money from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for winning the tournament. The runners-up, New Zealand, will receive Rs 10.75 crore.
Meanwhile, it is not yet clear how much prize money individual players, including Sanju Samson, will receive. However, as in the previous edition, the 15-member squad is expected to receive an equal share of the reward. Sanju Samson was one of the standout performers of the tournament, scoring 321 runs in five innings, including three half-centuries. He also created a record by hitting the most sixes in a single edition of the tournament.
