MALAPPURAM: The aircraft that was destroyed in the shocking Karipur plane crash that shook Kerala has been brought to a scrap yard in Pattambi. The damaged Air India Express aircraft has been transported there to be dismantled. The Karipur plane crash occurred on August 7, 2020, and 21 people were killed in the disaster.
The aircraft wreckage reached the scrap yard about ten days ago. The remains were brought in four trucks, and workers at the yard said that more parts are yet to arrive. They also added that many people are visiting the yard to see the aircraft.
The accident took place at Calicut International Airport when an Air India Express flight operating under the Vande Bharat Mission skidded off the runway while landing and fell about 35 feet down a slope. The aircraft involved in the crash was flight IX-1344 from Dubai to Kozhikode, which arrived around 7.45 pm. Among those who died in the accident was the pilot, Captain D. V. Sathe. A total of 191 people were on board the aircraft, including 185 passengers, of whom 11 were children.
The aircraft fell outside the airport near the Kondotty-Kunnumpuram road, towards the Cross Belt Road via Melangadi. Due to the impact of the fall, the aircraft split into two parts. Reports said the accident occurred after the aircraft skidded off the runway during heavy rain, making it difficult to see the runway clearly. The plane first drifted to the left side of the runway during landing, and while attempting to take off again, it fell off the runway and crashed down the slope.
