TEHRAN: Recent reports claim that the United States has carried out another attack on the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in Iran. A security personnel was reportedly killed in the incident. Iran’s nuclear energy agency has confirmed the attack but stated that there has been no nuclear radiation leak. According to reports, the missile struck a building near the nuclear facility, and the security official who was present there was killed.
The Bushehr plant is located about 240 kilometres from Kuwait, raising concerns in the country. There are fears that any radiation leak could affect Kuwait. However, the nuclear energy agency has clarified that no leakage has occurred so far, and efforts are ongoing to prevent any such incident. The Bushehr facility has reportedly been attacked three times earlier as well.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that Iran may take more aggressive steps after pulling back from a ceasefire proposal put forward by the United States. It is reported that Iran is considering closing the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait, similar to the Strait of Hormuz. Several countries have been pressuring Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and this new move could further disrupt global fuel supply. Closing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could lead to serious global consequences.
The strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden, and Yemen lies along one side of it. Iran-backed Houthi movement rebels had recently threatened to disrupt shipping through the strait, although no action followed. Reports suggest that Iran could use the Houthis to gain control over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
