"Bitter defeats": Mojtaba Khamenei warns US of new naval retaliation

TEHRAN: As the naval confrontation with the United States continues to escalate, Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has issued a stern warning to the U.S. and its allies. In a recent statement, he declared that the Iranian Navy is prepared to deliver "bitter defeats" to its enemies.

Mojtaba Khamenei, who assumed Iran’s highest office following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in February, once again released his message in written form. He has not made a public appearance or addressed the media since taking office, fueling persistent uncertainties regarding his health. This latest message was issued on the occasion of Iran’s military anniversary.

In the text, Mojtaba praised Iran's military prowess, specifically commending soldiers for their defence of the nation’s territory, waters, and flag. He also directed sharp criticism toward what he termed the "American-Zionist alliance," asserting that Iran has exposed the "weakness of the two leading armies of distrust and arrogance." He further warned that the Navy is preparing for "new retaliations," likening the potential response to the way Iranian drones "strike the enemy like lightning."

Despite these proclamations, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains critical. The U.S. has maintained its blockade on Iranian ports, prompting Tehran to once again shut down the strategic waterway. Although Iran briefly announced it would lift restrictions following the ceasefire in Lebanon, it reversed its position within hours. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed that Iranian gunboats opened fire on a tanker attempting to transit the Strait today. Consequently, ship-tracking data indicates that cargo vessels are now turning away from the sea route to avoid the escalating conflict.
