THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The KSEB has announced electricity regulation in the state. The regulation will be implemented under a system called “peak load management.” Officials said consumers will be informed in advance about any interruptions. Currently, electricity usage in the state is highest between 6 pm and 11 pm. Due to the heavy load, the power distribution system is under strain. The regulation is being introduced to prevent possible system failures.

Power supply may be interrupted for 15 to 30 minutes at a time. KSEB said that prior intimation will be given through SMS. Officials clarified that this is not a regular power cut, but a controlled restriction based on electricity consumption in specific areas. The step is being taken as a precaution to avoid damage to the power infrastructure.

The crisis has worsened due to a sharp rise in peak-time electricity demand and a reduction in power availability from outside the state. Although load shedding has not been officially announced, unannounced outages have been reported at night in urban areas as well. KSEB had earlier clarified that these are not “power cuts” but “load restrictions.” Now, a more structured and officially announced restriction system is being introduced. As the situation remains serious, the Regulatory Commission has allowed KSEB to purchase 250 megawatts of electricity from the term-ahead market until May 15, at a rate of up to Rs 10 per unit.
