dam

NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu has approached the Supreme Court seeking permission to cut down trees near the Baby Dam in Mullaperiyar. The petition was filed by Tamil Nadu in the Supreme Court, citing Kerala's earlier permission to cut down trees and later revoking the order. Tamil Nadu has filed a petition seeking reinstatement of Kerala's permission for axing trees near the Baby Dam. Permission has been sought to cut down 15 trees. Permission has also been sought to repair the road in the Vallakkadavu-Mullaperiyar forest area.

Tamil Nadu has also accused Kerala of obstructing efforts to strengthen the Mullaperiyar-Baby dam. It is alleged in the petition that Kerala has been delaying the issuance of permission to cut down trees for six years. Tamil Nadu has filed this fresh petition before as before detailed hearing of Mullaperiyar case at SC. The court will hear detailed arguments on the petitions related to Mullaperiyar on December 10.
