NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu cadre IPS officer and Indo-Tibetan Border Police Director General Sanjay Arora will assume charge as Delhi Police Commissioner today. He replaces present commissioner Rakesh Asthana, who has retired from service. Arora will be in service till July 31, 2025. It is heard that Sanjay Arora has been made the chief of Delhi Police as per the special interest of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Arora, who graduated in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Malaviya National Institute of Technology in Jaipur, was part of the task force against Veerappan gang. As an instructor, he had made remarkable contributions in the field of training, serving as commandant (combat wing) at the ITBP Academy, Mussoorie from 2000 to 2002.
He was city police commissioner for two years from 2002 in Coimbatore. He had also served as deputy director of vigilance and corruption, ADGP Tamil Nadu Police (Operations) and (Administration). He got training from NSG in 1991. He had also served in forces like BSF and CRPF. He had received police medal for meritorious service in 2004, President's police medal for distinguished service in 2014, UN Peacekeeping Medal and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Medal for Gallantry. The Special Security Group (SSG) was formed under the leadership of Sanjay Arora at a time when the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu was under threat from Tamil Tigers.
