Har Ghar Tiranga, does RSS hesitates to hoist tricolor despite Modi's request?

rss

To mark 75th year of India's independence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced to hoist tricolour from August 13-15 in every house of the country. After this, in 'Mann Ki Baat' program, he asked everyone to put tricolur as their social media profile picture. Following the Prime Minister's announcement, crores of citizens have now changed their profile pictures to the national flag. The main opposition Congress put a picture of Nehru holding a flag to defend the Prime Minister's idea. Along with this, the Congress leaders also raised another question, why is the RSS not listening to PM's words, why are they hesitant to put the tricolor as profile picture? With this, the discussion about the connection of RSS with the national flag has started.

While several BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have changed their profile pictures to the tricolor, RSS leaders are yet to do so. This gave the opposition an opportunity to question the party. But in response to this, the BJP replied that Independence Day celebrations should not be 'politicised'. They also argued that all the activities of the RSS are full of patriotism. Rahul Gandhi retorted asking why the Tricolor flag was not hoisted at the RSS headquarters for 52 years.

During India's independence, the RSS was of the opinion that only saffron colour should be in the national flag. They also raised the argument that the tricolor flag is an inauspicious sign. However, on 15 August 1947, the RSS hoisted the national flag at its headquarters in Nagpur. On 26 January 1950, they also hoisted the tricolor flag. But then there was a gap of 52 years that is five decades to hoist the national flag in Nagpur. On 26 January 2022, the tricolor flag was hoisted there again. The RSS's justification now is that this happened because of India's flag code which restricts the hoisting of the national flag by private organisations. The Flag Code of India outlines the restrictions on the use of the national flag by private, public and government institutions.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat gave an answer to those who argue that RSS is against the national flag at an event held in Delhi in 2018. He said that the party has respected tricolor since its formation.

RSS supports 'Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' programs. Sunil Ambekar, RSS Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh has said that they had given instructions in this regard in July to ensure the full support and participation of Swayamsevaks.
