Doctor caught while taking bribe

PATHANAMTHITTA: A doctor has been arrested for taking bribe at Pathanamthitta District General Hospital. The Vigilance arrested Ophthalmologist, Dr. Shaji Mathew, from the General Hospital for taking a bribe from one of his patients. The incident occurred yesterday morning at 10.30.

The Vigilance intervened after getting a complaint from a native of Thumpamon, Ajeesh. The Vigilance said that the doctor use to take bribes before surgery. After an eye operation, while Ajeesh was recuperating at the hospital, Dr. Shaji Mathew demanded money from his father Achyuthan. When the doctor failed to get the bribe he demanded Rs.3000 for discharging Ajeesh.

Following the doctor’s demand, Ajeesh lodged a complaint with the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau. When Ajeesh handed over the notes given by the Vigilance to Dr. Shaji Mathew, Dy.SP Hari Vidyadharan and his team apprehended the doctor.

Dr.Shaji Mathew, who had retired from service came back to provide medical service through the National Health Mission.
