KOCHI: 'Vegetarian meat' that looks and tastes like real meat may sound too good to be true but it has become a reality. A 'green meat' with all the nutrients and no cholestero has been brought to the market by Greenovative Foods Private Limited, a startup in Kochi. This instant success product can satisfy the needs of meat eaters by pleasing their taste buds without killing an animal.

'Green meat' was born from thought of friends PG Unnikrishnan and Dheeraj Mohan to make vegetarian meat, which is equivalent to animal meat. A formula for this was prepared with the support of research institutes. The product proved to be a hit when it made its way to the market in January. The product is sold online.

Green meat is prepared by mixing yellow pea, soybean and corn. Maize is the main raw material. Protein is processed from peas, fenugreek, rice etc. The fibers in meat is also present in this. These are combined to make green meat in the form of meat.

Green Meat's laboratory is located at Cribs Bionest in Kinfra Hi-Tech Park in Kalamassery. 50 kg will be produced daily. The founders are trying to increase production by setting up their own unit.
