KOCHI: While there are more women than men in Kerala, there are only 967 women for every 1000 men in Ernakulam district. This discovery was made in the Annual Viral Statistics study conducted by the District Economic Statistics Department. The study was based on the birth and death report of the previous year. In the last year, 39226 births were reported in the district. Out of this, 19939 (50.83%) are boys and 19287 (49.17%) are girls.
The study was focused on urban rural areas of the district and was limited to each local body. The current male-female ratio is the basis for future population survival. Fluctuations in the male-female ratio will affect the population in the future. According to the study, this will have consequences in the social, cultural and economic sectors.
