SYDNEY: Shreyas Iyer, who sustained serious injuries during the third match against Australia, has been admitted to a hospital in Sydney. This was confirmed by the Indian Cricket Control Board (BCCI). He hurt his left rib cage while fielding.
Internal bleeding was detected. Iyer is undergoing treatment and is recovering, said the BCCI said. The board's medical team is in touch with health workers in Sydney and is constantly seeking information, the BCCI said. The Indian team’s doctor is with Iyer, the board said. Meantime, Iyer's parents have applied for an emergency visa to reach Sydney and meet their son.
Iyer has been in the ICU for the past two days. Internal bleeding was detected following the injury. It is reported that he will remain in the hospital for observation for up to seven days to prevent infection. Initial reports said that he will have to stay away from the field for about three weeks, but it is expected that he will need more time as the injury is serious.
He fell while trying to catch the ball during the game and hit his elbow and ribs. Pictures of him lying on the ground in pain were released. The medical team later arrived and admitted him to the hospital. Iyer is not a member of India's T20 squad against Australia. India's next ODI series is against South Africa in November.
