WASHINGTON: A man armed with a rifle rammed into a Jewish synagogue at Michigan in USA, and he was shot and killed. He was killed by security officers after he rammed his vehicle into the building. The incident took place at the Temple of Israel Synagogue near the city of Detroit.
No one was seriously injured in the attack. The attack was towards a large synagogue with 12,000 members. The attack was when there were about 140 children in the synagogue's primary school. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said that everyone was safe and that it was a planned attack targeting the Jewish community.
The attacker drove his vehicle through the front entrance of the synagogue. There was only one person in the vehicle. Initial indications are that he is of Lebanese origin living in Michigan. The vehicle used in the attack was registered in his name. Some of the attacker's family members were reportedly killed in an Israeli attack in Beirut. A security officer was injured when the vehicle hit him. Explosives were found in the attacker's vehicle during an inspection.
Officials said they were investigating the incident and the suspect's true motive is not known. Synagogues around the world have been on high alert and security has been beefed up in recent days since the US and Israel launched missile strikes on Iran on February 28.
