WASHINGTON: Days after the US carried out airstrikes in Venezuela, President Donald Trump has issued a fresh warning to India. Trump warned that the US could raise the tariff on India if it continues to import oil from Russia. He added that Prime Minister Modi "knew that he was not happy" and that India tried to make him happy by reducing oil purchases from Russia. He said this while addressing the media on board Air Force One yesterday.
The American Commander-in-Chief also said that India has substantially reduced its oil purchases from Russia. "They wanted to make me happy. Basically, Modi is a very good person. He knew I was not happy. It was important to make me happy. They do trade, and we can raise tariffs on them very quickly," Trump said.
Despite India explaining that importing Russian oil is necessary for its domestic energy security, the US has continued to criticise the move. Trump’s latest comments come amid ongoing tensions over tariffs.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi and President Trump had discussed the importance of maintaining strong bilateral trade ties during a phone call, even as trade-related disputes continue. The call took place as Indian and US officials were preparing to begin fresh talks aimed at resolving long-standing trade issues.
Meanwhile, India has also reacted to the recent US attack in Venezuela. India said the developments in Venezuela are deeply concerning and that the situation is being closely monitored. It urged all parties involved to resolve issues peacefully through dialogue. On Saturday night, India advised its citizens to avoid travel to Venezuela and asked Indians currently in the country to remain extremely cautious.
