COLOMBO: 22 sailors from the Iranian warship IRIS Dena, torpedoed by a US submarine off the coast of Sri Lanka, were discharged from the hospital. The injured sailors were discharged today, hospital authorities said. The sailors, who were being treated at the National Hospital in Galle, were transferred to the Sri Lankan Air Force base in Koggala in ambulances under tight security.
10 seriously injured sailors are still receiving treatment at the Galle National Hospital in Karapitiya. Sri Lanka recovered the bodies of 84 Iranian sailors killed in the attack. Of these, 80 have been identified by their surviving colleagues. The IRIS Dena was returning from a naval exercise in Visakhapatnam. Last Wednesday, an American submarine attacked the IRIS Dena off the southern coast of Sri Lanka. As a result, the ship sank in the sea.
The Sri Lankan government has begun steps to send the bodies of the victims to Iran immediately, but officials have warned that it is not safe to transport them by sea or air in the current war situation.
