WASHINGTON: India voted in favour of a resolution supporting a two-state solution to the Palestinian issue. The resolution introduced by France in the UN General Assembly was supported by 142 countries, opposed by 10 countries and abstained by 12 countries. The countries opposing the resolution include Israel, the US, Argentina and Hungary. France introduced the resolution in the General Assembly by endorsing the New York Declaration.
The resolution calls for a peaceful and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the effective implementation of the two-state solution. The resolution calls for collective action to end the war in Gaza and achieve a just settlement. The declaration emphasises the need for a sovereign and viable Palestinian state, integrating Gaza with the West Bank.
India's change of position on Gaza was reflected in the vote in favour of the resolution. In the last three years, India has abstained from voting on the Gaza issue four times in the UN General Assembly. The resolution received unanimous support from the Arab countries of the Gulf.
