KATHMANDU: Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki is set to become the interim Prime Minister of Nepal. Reports say that she will be sworn in and assume office soon. The decision to appoint her was taken following discussions between military leaders and Gen Z protesters. The protesters proposed Sushila's name after consulting with the Secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
Sushila Karki, Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice, had delivered several landmark judgments, including those ensuring citizenship rights for women and children.
Earlier, Nepalese media had reported disagreements among different groups supporting various candidates. With the anti-corruption movement in the country lacking a clear leader, four prominent names had come forward as possible contenders for the Prime Minister’s post: Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah, Sushila Karki, former Electricity Authority chief Kulman Ghising, and Dharan Mayor Harka Raj Sampang Rai. Balen Shah, a former rapper and now the Mayor of Kathmandu, has been a strong supporter of the Gen-Z protesters.
