TEHRAN: Iran has made its stand clear amidst the nuclear deal talks with the United States. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Iran will not give up uranium enrichment or give in to US military pressure. He also dismissed the arrival of US military forces in the Middle East.
"Their military presence in the region does not frighten us," Araghchi said. He added that Iran does not trust the United States. He also expressed doubt about whether the US is sincere and committed to the nuclear agreement. Araghchi rejected questions about whether Iran would step back from uranium enrichment, saying it is a matter of national sovereignty.
“Why are we so firm about enrichment? Even if a war is imposed on us, why would we not give it up? Because no one has the right to control our behaviour,” Araghchi said.
Iran and the United States began talks on nuclear issues in Oman last Friday. Iran agreed to enter discussions on nuclear limitations in hopes of easing US economic sanctions. However, Araghchi recently said he is not sure whether the United States is truly ready for serious negotiations.
“They are afraid of our atomic bomb. But we are not even seeking such a thing. Our atomic bomb is the strength to say no to a world power,” Araghchi said.
