WASHINGTON: Hours after carrying out an airstrike in Venezuela and taking President Nicolas Maduro hostage, the United States issued a warning to neighbouring Colombia. US President Donald Trump, in a sly warning to Colombian President Gustavo Petro, said a similar situation would befall Colombia if the country continues to support drug trafficking into the U.S.
“He’s making cocaine, and they’re sending it into the United States, so he does have to watch his ass, remarked Trump to media queries.
Gustavo Petro harshly condemned the US action as a blatant violation of the sovereignty of Latin American countries. He added that this would cause a humanitarian crisis.
Trump described Colombia, Mexico and Cuba as "problematic neighbours" that pose a threat to the United States.
“Cuba is a failing state. Mexico is controlled by drug mafias. There are three major cocaine factories in Colombia, and Gustavo Petro is abetting drug production.” Said Donald Trump.
Donald Trump criticised Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, saying she was not governing her country well. "Mexico is run by cartels. Do you want them to be thrown out? I asked Claudia many times about that. Claudia did not give a positive answer to that," Trump said.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has hinted that Cuba could be the Trump administration's next target. The US has a long history of military intervention in Latin America, including supporting the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion, led by Cuban exiles aimed at overthrowing Fidel Castro.
