NEW DELHI: It was reported yesterday that an Air India flight traveling from Chicago to Delhi was forced to return to Chicago due to some issues. Now, Air India has explained that the flight was forced to return to Chicago after encountering an issue with its onboard toilets. The problem arose when a majority of the 12 toilets aboard the flight became inoperable. Air India explained that items such as plastic bags, cloth pieces, and clothing were flushed down the toilets, rendering them unusable.

Of the 12 toilets on board, eight were affected. Since the flight could not land at any European airports, it was forced to return to O'Hare International Airport in Chicago.

The incident took place on March 5, 2025, aboard Air India flight AI126, which had departed from Chicago for Delhi. Approximately one hour and 45 minutes into the flight, the crew discovered the toilets were non-functional. Prioritizing the safety and comfort of passengers, the decision was made to turn the flight back while it was flying over the Atlantic Ocean.

Upon returning to Chicago, the toilets were repaired, and the flight took off again after around ten hours. Blankets, clothing, and diapers were found in the toilets. Air India has since urged passengers to use the toilets responsibly.
