SC issues notice on Kiran Kumar's plea against conviction in Vismaya case

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has issued a notice on the plea filed by Kiran Kumar, accused in the suicide case of medical student Vismaya M Nair, following dowry harassment. The Supreme Court sent the notice to the state government. The notice was issued by a bench consisting of Justices M M Sundaresh and Rajesh Bindal.

The plea was considered by the Supreme Court last time, but did not go into detailed arguments. Kiran had approached the high court with the same request, but the plea was filed in the Supreme Court in a situation where a decision has not been made yet. He claimed that there is no evidence to directly link him to Vismaya's suicide. Advocate Deepak Prakash appeared for him in the case.

Vismaya was found hanging in the house of Kiran Kumar, assistant motor vehicle inspector, Poruvazhi Ambalathumbhagam Chandravilasam on June 21 in 2021. The WhatsApp messages and pictures sent by Vismaya to her classmate and sister-in-law about the harassment she faced had emerged then. Kiran Kumar, who went into hiding after taking Vismaya to the hospital, surrendered at the Sasthamkotta station. Kiran was later dismissed from service. The investigation was completed within 90 days under the supervision of IG Harshita Attalluri and charge sheet was submitted.

The Supreme Court had granted bail to Kiran as the trial was in its final stages. In addition to the incidents at home, there are witness statements that Kiran Kumar created trouble by demanding a change of car in public on August 29, 2020 in Chittumala and on January 3, 2021 at Vismaya's house in Nilamel. The court has also accepted phone conversations over dowry dispute as evidence.
