KOLKATA: High alert continues in Murshidabad, West Bengal, where protests against the Waqf Act amendment have escalated into major clashes. The number of people arrested in the clashes has reached 150. By Saturday night, the Union Home Ministry had deployed four companies of BSF troops in the area.
Meanwhile, the ongoing conflict has left local traders in fear. Many shops have been damaged in the conflict, and property looted by criminals. Three people, including a father and son, were killed in clashes in Murshidabad on Saturday. Hargovinda Das and Chandan Das were dragged out of their house and hacked in front of their loved ones. The incident took place in Jafrabad. Their house was looted by assailants. Another person was also found shot dead in Dhulian, Samserganj. Several people, including policemen, were injured in the clash.
BJP alleged that 400 Hindus have fled from Dhulian in Murshidabad, where violence is ongoing. The allegations were made by opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari on social media. Adhikari said that the fled Hindu families have sought refuge in a school in Malda and reasserted that the persecution in the name of religion was a cruel reality in Bengal.
