NEW DELHI: Reports are claiming that the central government is considering a new toll policy aimed at reducing the difficulties faced during highway travel and cutting costs for vehicle owners. According to a report by The Times of India, the proposed toll system may include an annual FASTag pass facility. The annual pass would allow unlimited travel on national highways and expressways for a one-time payment of Rs 3,000 per year.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is said to be considering a dual payment system related to FASTag. Under this system, users would be able to choose between an annual pass or a distance-based toll rate. With a one-time FASTag recharge of Rs 3000, private vehicle owners could travel throughout the year without incurring any additional toll charges on national highways and state expressways. Another option under consideration is a fixed toll rate of Rs 50 per 100 kilometres, replacing the current toll plaza fee structure.
The existing FASTag will continue to be used under the new system. Meanwhile, the earlier proposal for a lifetime FASTag, which required a one-time payment of Rs 30,000 for 15 years, has reportedly been shelved. To ensure smooth travel, the policy also aims to eliminate toll booths and implement sensor-based digital toll collection. This system would rely on GPS and automated vehicle tracking technologies.
The government is also considering provisions to address the concerns of contractors and toll operators. The ministry plans to provide them compensation based on digital toll data and an approved formula. To prevent toll evasion, banks may be given more powers, such as the authority to enforce a minimum balance requirement in accounts linked to FASTag. If implemented, the policy could significantly reduce the cost of long-distance road travel for frequent travellers.
