NEW DELHI: In the wake of the rising tensions in the Gulf region following the recent attacks on Iran by Israel and the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has convened an emergency meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). The meeting will focus on the safety and security of Indian citizens in the region.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to return from Tamil Nadu at around 9.30 pm ahead of the meeting. The situation in the Gulf will be reviewed by the security panel of the Union Cabinet. Earlier, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held discussions with foreign ministers of seven countries on the evolving situation. The Indian Embassy in Tehran had asked the independent countries to end their silence on the matter. Yesterday, India issued a statement urging restraint, but there has been no further official response since.

Following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, a senior cleric, has been selected as the interim supreme leader of Iran amid political uncertainty.
