Crimes on the rise in India; cyber fraud and crimes against SC/ST communities surge

NEW DELHI: The 2023 report of the National Crime Records Bureau has revealed a shocking picture of crimes in the country. There has been a huge rise in cybercrimes and crimes against the Scheduled Castes.

Cybercrimes increased by 31.2% compared to 2022. More than half of these cases were financial frauds. Crimes against Scheduled Castes rose by 28.8% in just one year, with Manipur reporting the highest number of such cases.

Overall, total crimes in the country increased by 7.2%. According to the report, every hour in India, there are ten cybercrimes, three murder cases, and three rape cases.

Crimes against women rose by 0.7%. Among these, 29% of the cases were related to harassment by husbands and in-laws. Crimes against children increased by 9.2%.

At the same time, Kerala tops the list in filing charge sheets with 95.6%, while Kochi leads among cities with 97.2%. Nationwide, murder cases fell by 2.8%, but kidnapping cases increased by 5.6%, the figures show.
